38 YISD students receive scholarships
The Ysleta Independent School District surprised 38 seniors during class today with oversized scholarship checks.
The Ysleta Education Foundation awarded over $140,000 in one-time scholarships, ranging from $2,500 to $7,000 per student. The superintendent, parents and some district board members stopped class with cowbells and balloons to announce the recipients.
Ashley Melero, senior at Eastwood Highs School, did not believe the scholarship was for her at first. She thinks she won a $2,500 scholarship to Texas Tech University because of some of the struggles she overcame as a visually impaired student. She said she used to struggle passing mathematics tests.
“They always told me, ‘You’re going to be independent,’” she said
