Broad Foundation disperses scholarships, begins tour of YISD campuses

Broad Foundation representatives visited two El Paso school districts today to disperse scholarships and tour campuses.

Both Socorro and Ysleta independent school districts were Broad Prize finalists for the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. As finalists, each district received $250,000 in scholarships which were given to 29 graduating seniors – 16 in Ysleta and 13 in Socorro.

Students attending a four-year university were awarded $20,000 scholarships, $5,000 per year, and students about to enter a two-year community or junior college would receive $5,000, or $2,500 per year.

A group of researchers were also busy gathering research from students and teachers at Del Valle High School today as part of the Ysleta district site visit. NEIGHBORHOODS

They were also selected as one of four urban school districts across the country to be a Broad Prize finalist this year.

As a finalist this year, next year’s graduating seniors will be awarded $150,000 in scholarships. The winner will be announced on Sept. 20 in Washington, D.C., and receive a total of $550,000 for next year’s seniors in scholarships.

Shelley Billig, vice president of research organization RMC Research for the Broad Foundation, said this week that they visit schools to gather information and find evidence of student achievement. In addition to this week, the district has already submitted data which has already been reviewed. Researchers are now gathering final pieces of information.

“We’re trying to get a full and comprehensive look from the data,” she said.
