Clemson University Spending Goes Online In January
A check registry posted online every month gives taxpayers insight into everything from Anderson County’s $17,000 power bill to more than $3,800 the county has paid for supplies at Office Depot.Such transparency does not yet exist for the state’s public colleges and universities, but a bill proposed for the legislative session set to start Jan. 11 could change that. The Higher Education Transparency Act of 2011 was introduced Wednesday by House Speaker Bobby Harrell and House Education Committee Chairman Phil Owens of Pickens County. Flanking them were college and university presidents from 14 public schools around the state — including Clemson’s Jim Barker and Carolina’s Harris Pastides.“With another tight budget year ahead of us, we must ensure that every tax dollar is being spent wisely,” Harrell said.
