Feds Exploring Complaints Against Idaho Schools

One hundred Idaho high schools–including schools in the Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell districts–have been named in a report filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office For Civil Rights last week.

The 600-page complaint, which uses 2010 data, alleges that the schools are not providing equal opportunities for female high school students to play sports.

It is not clear who made the complaint regarding Title IX–a 1972 law that requires gender equity for boys and girls in every educational program that receives federal funding. A similar complaint was filed against nearly 100 Oregon high schools last month and Washington also faces a complaint.

“Our OCR (Office for Civil Rights) is evaluating the allegations in the complaints to determine if they are appropriate for OCR investigation and resolution,” David Thomas, a spokesman with the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C., wrote in an email to the Idaho Statesman.
