Fox Valley Schools Tread Carefully in Teaching Sex Education

Karen Lamers’ message to her twin daughters on the subject of teen sex is best summed up by the popular antidrug slogan of the 1980s: “Just say no.”

Still, Lamers recognizes that teens are curious about sex and may be tempted to experiment in risky behaviors during adolescence. That’s why she fully supports Kimberly Area School District’s inclusion of information about contraceptives in the sophomore health class curriculum.

“As a parent, I thought it was wonderful that we had an opportunity from the school to give that (information) to the kids,” said Lamers, the mother of 16-year-old daughters Samantha and Megan. “From birth to contraception — they explain a lot of things, which I’m happy about. To me, I was comfortable with whatever they were talking about in school.”

Providing information on family planning was previously optional for school districts, but a change in state statutes earlier this year now requires all districts that offer sex ed to provide information about contraception.
