Mattern: W.V. State Supt. Job “One Huge Honor”
The man who will be the next state Superintendent of Schools has often been the Department of Education’s “go-to guy.”
Ted Mattern will officially take over as Superintendent on January 3rd. That’s the day current Superintendent Dr. Steve Paine’s resignation takes effect. Paine is leaving the job to take a position in the private sector.
Mattern isn’t sure how long he’ll be serving in the position. It all depends on how the search for a permanent superintendent proceeds. It could be just two months, possibly a little longer. Regardless, Mattern says he is humbled to have been selected to fill in.
“I think that this one is just a huge honor to be asked to do this.”
Mattern says he will be working closely with the state Board of Education on the agenda that’s already been set.
“In the short period of time, my job will be to try to continue those initiatives and push them forward,” he said. “If I can get that done in a month or two, I think the board would be happy with that.”
Mattern has shown time and time again he is able to take difficult situations and turn them around. In just the past few years, he’s been tapped by the Department of Education to take over school systems like Mingo, Upshur and Grant counties as well as the Tri-County Vo-Tech Center.
