O’Shea Keleher Elementary students urged to walk, bike to school

Younger children were escorted into the building Friday at O’Shea Keleher Elementary School during the Walk or Bike to School Day Friday. (Victor Calzada / El Paso Times)The sidewalks in the neighborhoods of O’Shea Keleher Elementary School were filled with students who walked or biked to school this morning in participation of a grant the school received.

The event was the first in an initiative that encourages parents to walk their children to school every Friday for the next 10 weeks. The Texas Department of Transportation supplied the grant, Safe Routes, to encourage safety and a healthy alternative to riding in a car every morning.

Posters, balloons, music and full bike rack greeted students as they made their way to school before the 7:45 bell rang in the morning. Several police officers and crossing guards also monitored the streets near the school to make sure the students were getting there safely.

School officials said students received a free shirt for pledging to participate in the initiative and could be entered in a raffle for a free bike if they walk or bike to school 10 times.

“We’re very excited,” said Brenda Chacon, assistant principal for the school. “We have a very active community.”
