Simulation helps nursing students understand dementia
Lyndsey Slape is a healthy, sound 22-year-old UTEP senior.
But on Wednesday afternoon she couldn’t remember to turn on the lights when she entered a dark room or even perform simple tasks.
Slape was one of more than 20 students from UTEP’s School of Nursing who participated in a Virtual Dementia Tour Wednesday afternoon in the simulation lab in the Health/Sciences School of Nursing.
The Virtual Dementia Tour gave students a sense of what it is like to be an elderly person afflicted with arthritis, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Slape said the experience will help her understand the plight of geriatric patients.
“Hopefully it helps me meet their (future patients) needs better,” Slape said.
