Sully’s Court: That’s no All-American team

First post of the season, lets get controversial. The Associated Press All-American team was announced Monday. The first team was Jared Sullinger of Ohio State, Harrison Barnes of North Carolina, Terrence Jones of Kentucky, Jeremy Lamb of UConn, and Jordan Taylor of Wisconsin.

When we get to March, I think Sullinger and Jones will still be first-team players but Sullinger is the only lock. Jones is going to have to share the spotlight with a lot of other players on the Calipari Barnstorming SuperStars and may not end up with the individual stats needed. Barnes was first-team preseason last season and we saw how that turned out. Lamb is a tremendous guard but hed have to become more of an all-around force. Taylor is a really good guard but I dont see him as one of the five best players in the country. Not sure how that happened.

Plus you know some players will emerge and become great.

Some candidates:

Draymond Green, Michigan State: A coach on the floor but in the end probably too unselfish to get the needed attention.
Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota: Might be the best low-post player in the country, just needs to be consistent.
Robbie Hummel, Purdue: Coming off ACL surgery but he was a first-team caliber player before the injury
Perry Jones, Baylor: All sorts of talent, has to harness it.
John Jenkins, Vanderbilt: If the Commodores have great team success, hell get some recognition.
Ashton Gibbs, Pitt: Tough, heady, but Pitt players dont usually get a lot of big numbers

You never know, there could be another Jimmer Fredette.

Two candidates:

Ray McCallum, Detroit: He could have gone anywhere but chose to play for his father. He can dominate in the Horizon League.

Andrew Nicholson, Saint Bonaventure: Skinny, mobile power forward who would have to average a lot of points and help his formerly downtrodden team win.
