Vallivue Teacher: Luna’s Actions Break Ethics Code
State Superintendent of Schools Tom Luna broke the Idaho code of ethics for professional educators, according to a letterof complaint sent to the State Department of Education by a Vallivue High School English teacher.
Luna sent a memo to school administrators last week that warned of possible teacher ethics violations for school-based efforts to recall Luna and his education overhaul laws. Teacher Travis Manning quotes an Idaho code in his Tuesday letter that says local school boards can determine what schools can be used for. Luna quotes Idaho’s ethics code for teachers that states teachers can’t use “institutional privileges” for political purposes. Violations of the code can result in loss of teacher certification.
Manning also writes that Luna’s visits to schools to discuss his education overhaul is political “stumping” and therefore violates the same ethics code. He writes that Luna and the state violated the ethics code by “intentionally underestimating” the state education budget by millions of dollars.
