IHSAA to have town hall series on non-traditional student participation
The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced a town meeting series that will explore the topic of “non-traditional student participation in IHSAA member schools.”
Nationwide, 27 states do not allow non-traditional students (home schools, non-accredited schools and virtual schools) to participate in interscholastic athletics at home district schools. There are 21 states that allow such involvement and two others leave it to the school districts to make the determination.
Indiana does not allow it. Under current bylaws, the standard of attendance and enrollment is currently at a minimum of 70 percent of the maximum number of classes offered at the member school in a typical day.
The schedule for six town meetings (all at high schools): Dec. 8 at Crawfordsville; Dec. 12 at Muncie Central; Jan. 9 at Seymour; Jan. 10 at Valparaiso; Jan. 17 at Evansville Central; and Jan. 23 at Jimtown.
