Lightning postpones, cancels men’s soccer contest
Lightning postpones, cancels mens soccer contest It was 4:16 shy of a regulation contest when the Whittier College Poets and Occidental College Tigers were pulled off the field due to lightning. After waiting 26 of the mandatory 30 minutes before resuming play a plethora of lightning bolts joined a double rainbow across the Southern California sky forcing the game to be considered a no contest and postponed to a later date and time.
According to NCAA rules a contest must have lasted 70 minutes or more to be considered a complete game. The teams will reschedule and replay the match at a date and time yet to be determined.
Entering the day Whittier was tied atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings at 3-0-1 while Oxy was third at 3-1.
Although all statistics recorded today will be nullified, the teams were tied at 1-1. Whittier’s Srdan Jovanovic punched in the Poets’ goal on an assist from Adolfo Santos in the 22nd minute.
Moments before the game was suspended for the first time Daniel Watson scored an unassisted goal to knot things up.
Occidental will be back on the field Saturday, Oct. 2 when they host the Bulldogs from the University of Redlands at 1:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field.
