Rhode Islanders shine at track and field national championships
Rhode Island produced three All-Americans from the New Balance National Track and Field Championships, held over the weekend in Greensboro, N.C.
In the girls’ 4-kilogram hammer event, Barrington senior Robyn McFetters and Central falls senior Aleide Fernandes finished third and fifth, respectively. McFetters threw 165 feet, 5 inches (50.41 meters), and Fernandes 158-8 (48.37).
In the boys’ high jump, Central Falls junior Steve Vazquez earned All-American honors by placing fourth with a height of 6-8 (2.03).
In other meet highlights, the R.I. record for the boys’ 400-meter intermediate hurdles was broken by Classical senior Jarrel Forbes, who finished 15th with a time of 54.05 seconds, thus breaking his own state mark, set in May, of 55.35.
Chariho’s Mike Marsella and Cranston West’s Bob Allen, who went head-to-head in the State Championship 1500 meters, faced each other in the New Balance mile run. Marsella finished seventh in 4:09.09, and Allen 11th in 4:17.60.
Hope High junior Royal Cheatham finished fifth in her heat of the “Emerging Elite” 200 meters in a wind-aided time of 24.75, eventually clocking 25.13 in the finals. She also placed 15th in the long jump (16-10.50/5.14 meters), and 14th in the “Emerging Elite” 100 (12.35).
Classical freshman Madeleine Berkson placed seventh in the championship 800 meters (2:13.43). Berkson also ran in the “Emerging Elite” mile, placing 16th in 5:08.27.
Hendricken senior Mike Maloof was the top Rhode Island finisher in the boys’ 12-pound hammer. Maloof threw 193-5 (58.95 meters). Chariho senior Innocent Jacob placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 23 feet (7.01).
