Second half surge sends soccer past CMS

Second half surge sends soccer past CMS A 2-1 road victory today over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas marked the third consecutive win for the Occidental College women’s soccer team, who remain undefeated in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The end of a four-game road trip ended positively for the Tigers who locked up the 2-1 win after a scoreless first half in Claremont today.

Oxy’s first spark came in the 69th minute when freshman Elissa Minamishin scored in unassisted fashion to give the Black and Orange a momentary lead. Just a minute later, however, the Athenas countered that goal with one of their own, knotting things at 1-1.

Over the next 16 minutes the teams battled before the Tigers’ Alex Nicholson found the back of the CMS net with the winning goal four minutes before time expired in the game.

CMS out shot the Tigers 12-9 with nine of those shots coming in the second half. Six of the 12 were on goal and Robin Feldman deflected five total attempts, four in the second period of play, to keep Oxy in the game. The Tigers were awarded no corner kicks, while the Athenas tallied five.

Occidental used just 14 players in the game.

With the win, Occidental improves to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in SCIAC action. Saturday night the Tigers will host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens under the lights on Patterson Field at 7:00 p.m. If you can not make it out to the game, follow the Tigers live video feed.
